Silver Star, April 2013

Katt visited me in Battle Ground in April. Silver Star mountain rises 4,364 feet above sea level and provides unparalleled views of Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, Mt. Jefferson, and Saddle Mountain in Clatsop county on clear days. The hike from the southern approach is from the Grouse Vista trailhead, about 6 miles round-trip. (A shorter approach can be had from the north, 4 miles round-trip.) In the last mile or so we encountered well-consolidated snow-covered trails. I’m over 200 pounds, it was late in the day, and fortunately I only post-holed twice!

On the way up we witnessed a Robinson helicopter doing some pinnacle landings on the surrounding ridge tops, which looked exciting. It was most likely a student pilot from Hillsboro Aviation’s popular rotorcraft flight school.

The skiing off the summit ridges looks amazing. The trailhead is low enough this is likely a great spring skiing location. I wanted to return the following weekend but a trip to Mt. St. Helens won out.
